For half a century domestic life in Britain has been dominated by the TV set. On 4 November 2009 our relationship with Television enters a new phase with the digital switchover of the Granada region’s Winter Hill transmitter.

Manchester, Television and the City: Ghosts of Winter Hill celebrates the city’s invaluable contribution to Television, and looks at the way TV has fine-tuned its distinctive voice and identity.  This surprising story is told via a wide variety of programmes, from dramas to documentaries, soaps to sport; the well loved and the little known.  Rare archive material and unique insights from well known industry figures will also be presented.

Looking forward to the future, which for Manchester means the arrival of MediaCity UK and BBC North, the exhibition also examines our changing viewing habits and considers what  life after the Television era might hold.

Urbis is an exhibition centre of city life. They have 5 floors of changing exhibitions, so there is always something new to see whenever you visit.

Their exhibitions offer unique insights into the culture of the modern city, about Manchester, art and culture including  innovative explorations of design, architecture, graffiti, music and the urban environment.

Admission is free to both urbis and the exhibition.
