Come and meet some new Manchester friends, on this, one of the most scenic walks that Manchester has to offer.
Manchester was at the heart of the industrial revolution, and the canal system was at the heart of Manchester’s success. Would the city have gained the title of “Cottonopolis” without its waterways?
One of the first modern canals in the country, the Bridgewater Canal, was opened in 1761 by the Duke of Bridgewater. His aim was to find an effective way of transporting coal direct from his mine in Worsley to the centre of Manchester.
The Bridgewater Canal was a huge success, and was followed by a network of canals around Manchester and across the UK.
The glory days of the busy waterways may be over; but a walk along the city’s canals now allows you to appreciate Manchester’s industrial heritage, and gives a unique perspective of the city.
The tour will last approximately 1 ½ hours and afterwards we will retreat to a local pub or restaurant for lunch (optional).
Sue your host will TEXT you on the day telling you where she is and what she's wearing at The Museum of Science and Industry so you'll have her number just in case you're running late or want her to meet you outside first.
Any drinks or food are additional and payable by you.
