The Route: 3 hour Middlewood Way to Marple Locks Walk

Let Social Circle help improve your health, wellbeing and connect you with friends on this walk and take in the beauty and history of Middlewood Way to Marple Locks.

The Route:

Opened on the 2nd of August 1869 this area was driven by the coal pits of Poynton and the rich cotton industry.

Despite plugging a useful Gap the canal rotes and railway lines were closed down in favour of the road travel. The railway line limped to closure 5th of January 1970.

Now a stunning historical and picturesque area the canal opens up to all kinds of nature. Fish, baby fish, ducks and ducklings, geese and goslings. Itys Lovely to also see the aqueduct stunning views, and great locks.

Not far from the town centre is this fascinating example of canal engineering. The locks, bridges, warehouse and aqueduct are well worth a visit, walk the full flight and reflect how these were made with no hydraulic cranes, power tools or modern logistics. Reflect on the fact that baring a little maintenance they still function after 200.

What to Bring? A bottle of water/snack and a smile.
Hope you can join us.
Steve

What our members say:

"Thanks for a wonderful walk around Dunham Massey. It was a beautiful sunny day. Ee took our time and we met and fed the deer. Perfect!" Nic

"I decided it was time to start getting active again. The easy pace and distances coupled with the promise of sunday lunch had me sign up for Social Circle straight away. As a bonus, I got a 10 day pass to my local gym too." Dave
