Spending a day climbing in the great outdoors can be a highly enjoyable experience.

Theis Discover Rock Climbing: Outdoor course will demonstrate the fundamentals of climbing at a single pitch crag whilst under the supervision of a fully qualified climbing coach.

The skills taught and practiced on the course will include:

  • Finding your way around a guidebook
  • Crag etiquette & environment
  • Warming up and stretching
  • Climbing gear and belaying
  • Climbing movement and technique

Typical programme

Although the course is flexible it will usually keep to the following programme:

  • 9:00-9:30 Arrival at course venue
  • 9:30-10:00 Walk to the crag
  • 10:00-13:00 Introduction to outdoor rock climbing
  • 13:00-14:00 Lunch and bouldering
  • 14:00-16:30 Climbing practice and route bagging
  • 16:30-17:00 Walk out from the crag
  • 17:00 Course ends

Equipment required

You will need the following to enjoy the course in comfort and in safety:

  • Sturdy waterproofed boots, shoes or trainers (for the walk in)
  • Climbing shoes or stiff trainers
  • A waterproof top and trousers
  • A pair of warm gloves and a hat (even in summer)
  • A pair of loose lightweight trousers
  • An extra warm layer and/or duvet jacket
  • A small rucksack
  • Drinking bottle or bladder for water
  • A packed lunch and snacks
  • Something to tie your hair out of the way (if you have long hair)
  • Personal medication

Steve your host will TEXT you on the day telling you where he is and what he's wearing in Varsity so you'll have his number just in case you're running late or want him to meet you outside first.
