Parsley Hay is a bike rental centre located on the junction of the High Peak and Tissington trails. High Peak trail follows the trackbed of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, which was completed in 1831 to carry minerals and goods between the Cromford Canal wharf at High Peak Junction and the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. The line was closed in the 60’s and in 70’s Peak Park Planning Board and Derbyshire County Council bought the trackbed and adapted it for leisure use. The track is relatively flat (suitable for hybrid bikes not only MTBs) and offers great views of the surrounding countryside. Our route will take us along the High Peak Trail to Hopton which lies on the shore of Carsington Water, England’s 9th largest reservoir and a major leisure and activity centre. We will cycle through the woodland along the shore of the lake, to the Visitors Centre where we will have a well deserved break for tea and cakes. Afterwards, we’ll follow the 54 cycleway along some small roads to Tissington, where we’ll turn onto Tissington Trail to go back to Parsley Hay and return the bikes. Tissington trail runs along part of the trackbed of the former railway line connecting Ashbourne to Buxton. Similar to High Peak Trail, it has a firm crushed limestone surface which makes it ideal for cyclists and offers great views of the area. We will return the bikes at Parsley Hay and head by car to Hurdlow, a nearby village and home to the Royal Oak, Derbyshire Traditional Pub of the year 2010 winner, for dinner and a well deserved pint.

Kit list: comfortable legwear (tracksuit bottoms, combats, shorts or lycra pants,NO JEANS!!!!), trainers, fleece and waterproofs, gloves, daypack, water bottle, packed lunch.
