Arbor Low Stone Circle & Gib Hill Barrow Walk

Distance: 6 miles circular walk

Time: 3-4 hours

Terrain: moorland, farmers fields & wooded areas, last 2 miles return to the cars is on the road

Difficulty: moderate, there are some very steep steps

Parking: free

Entry: £1 per person to the prehistoric site

The most important prehistoric site of the East Midlands, Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge monument atmospherically set amid high moorland.

Within an earthen bank and ditch, a circle of some 50 white limestone slabs, all now fallen, surrounds a central stone ‘cove’ – a feature found only in major sacred sites. Nearby is enigmatic Gib Hill, a large burial mound.

Kit list: walking boots (no trainers), hiking trousers (no jeans), gaiters, warm clothes, waterproofs, hat, gloves, tea flask, sandwich
