Peveril Castle & Blue John Cavern Tour in Castleton
Castleton is a picturesque village located between the Dark and the White Peak in Peak District National Park. It is famous of mining Blue John (a semi-precious stone found only in Derbyshire) and is full of quaint jewelry shops, nice little pubs and interesting places to visit, including the Peveril Castle and some famous caves.
Peveril Castle (English Heritage, entry fee £4.50) was built in 11th century and abandoned by XVII century. It was an important local landmark and administrative centre. By XIX century it was a local touristic attraction and Sir Walter Scott featured it in his novel Peveril of the Peak. It’s located on a hill over the village of Castleton and offers amazing views of the surrounding area.
Blue John cavern (admission £9) is one of four show caves in Castleton and was featured on the 2005 TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the Midlands.
