Scafell Pike from Borrowdale (day hike)

Distance: 10 miles

Duration: 6-7h

Difficulty: 4 (medium hard)

At 978m (3.209 ft) Scafell Pike is the highest peak of England. Funnily enough, it was an error on an Ordnance Survey map which gave Scafell Pike its current name – previously being known as “The Pikes of Sca Fell” in honour of a neighbouring peak, which looks higher from many angles, but which is in fact ten feet lower. The summit was donated to the National Trust in 1919 by Lord Leconfield in memory of the men of the Lake District "who fell for God and King, for freedom, peace and right in the Great War". The Scafell Pike walk and the exhilarating, beautiful and breathtaking view from the top have inspired writers such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Baines and Wainwright, and on a clear day, you can see the Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Kit list: walking trousers (not jeans), walking boots, change, warm clothes, gaiters, waterproofs, tea flask, daypack, packed lunch

Regular walking can...

  • fill you with energy and confidence
  • help you beat stress
  • make your heart fitter and strengthen your bones
  • help you keep your weight down
