A winter walk along the Gritstone Edges

Distance: 9.5 miles

Duration: 4-5h

Dfficulty: 3

Baslow, Curbar and Froggat edges in Peak District are part an almost continuous line of cliffs running from Stanage Edge down to Birchen Edge near Chatsworth at the southern end. White Edge is also a part of this long gritstone edge, marking the boundary of a wide sweep of moorland overlooking the Derwent Valley. It is mostly covered with grass interspersed with patches of heather where red grouse breed and is a great place to get away from it all.

The gritstone edges dominate the Derwent valley and walking along them provides some stunning views of the Derwent valley and further afield. We will begin our walk in the village of Baslow where we will climb up to Eagle Stone, wherein years gone by, the young men of Baslow used to show off their prowess and fitness for marriage by climbing to the top.

Another curiosity on Balsow Edge is Wellington's monument, a 3 metre (10 feet) high cross which commemorates the Duke of Wellington, erected to balance Nelson's Monument which is a mile away, on Birchen edge. We will continue along the White Edge until Grouse Inn and then start our return along another stretch of beautiful gritstone edges, the Froggat and Curbar Edge. Walking along the Baslow Edge back to the eagle Stone we will descend to Baslow and our cars. We will then have a well deserved Sunday lunch at the award winning Checkers Inn in Froggat

Kit list: walking boots (no trainers), walking trousers (no jeans), hat, gloves, warm fleece, thermals, waterproofs, gaiters, tea/water flask, sandwich, snacks.

Regular walking can...

  • fill you with energy and confidence
  • help you beat stress
