Shutlingsloe and Tegg’s Nose from Langley

Distance: 9 miles

Duration: 4.5 h

Difficulty: 3 (a few short steep ascents)

Starting and finishing at the Leather’s Smithy pub near Langley, Cheshire, this beautiful walk takes us through the majestic Macclesfield forest, the last substantial remnant of the Royal Forest of Macclesfield, a once-extensive ancient hunting reserve. After crossing the forest, we will climb Shutlingsloe, also called the “Matterhorn of Cheshire” due to its distinctive shape, and with an elevation of 506 m (1,660 ft) the third highest peak in the county.

After admiring the views we will descent and make our way to the secluded Forest Chapel, a pink sandstone with a stone and slate roof church dating originally from 1673. The church still holds a rush-bearing ceremony every August, in which rushes are cut from nearby fields and marshes and strewn on the church floor and plaited into decorations as a symbol of renewal (the tradition ceased in most other churches in the 17th century). From the Forest Chapel we’ll cross the forest again and finally climb Tegg’s Nose (380 m (1,247 ft)), offering views across the Cheshire Plain to the west take in Liverpool and the Welsh hills, before returning to the Leather’s Smithy for a well deserved pint and a Sunday roast.

Kit list: walking boots (no trainers), walking trousers (no jeans), waterproofs, gaiters, fleece, hat, gloves, daypack, tea flask/water, snacks

Regular walking can...

  • fill you with energy and confidence
  • help you beat stress
  • make your heart fitter and strengthen your bones
  • help you keep your weight down
