The Strid, Simon's Seat and Troller's Gill Walk
Duration: 5-6 h
Distance: 13.5 miles
Difficulty: 3.5
This beautiful walk starts with a scenic if a bit tiring 350m climb from Bolton Abbey to Simon's Seat (485m), which offers splendid views of the surrounding area on a clear day.
After a cup of tea and a few minutes admiring the scenery, we will descend to the beautiful Parcevall Hall and have tea/lunch in the garden tea rooms before tackling the magnificent Troller's Gill, one of the local limestone gorges. Legend has it that the Gill is the home of trolls, and the mythical monstrous black dog Barghest. It is also the location of an old lead and later fluorspar mine which was last worked in the 1960s. From the Gill we will continue our pleasant walk over to Appletreewick and then stroll along the banks of the River Wharfe.
We will then go towards Barden Bridge and cross the pretty Strid Wood Nature Trail before returning to the cars and a well-deserved Sunday dinner at the Craven Heifer in Skipton.
Kit list: hat, gloves, warm clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, walking trousers walking boots as may be slippy tea flask.
