Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton, Walter Greenwood's Love on the Dole and Howard Spring's Fame is the Spur are all set in Manchester. But where in the city did the action take place? And where did locally born authors Anthony Burgess and Thomas De Quincey find their inspiration? We will visit the great locations of Mancunian literary lore: Hanky Park, Coketown, the site of the Peterloo massacre, Xaverian College (where Anthony Burgess read his samizdat copy of Ulysses) and Louis Golding's Magnolia Street, with a break at the sumptuous Portico Library half way.
