Verdi's neglected grand opera is presented by the Royal Opera for the very first time in a major new production. Palermo, 1282. The French have occupied Sicily. Duchess Helene (Marina Poplavskaya) is held hostage by French governor Guy de Montfort (Michael Volle), who has already had her brother executed. Seeking vengeance, Helene turns to partisan doctor Jean Procida (Erwin Schrott) and rebellious young patriot Henri (Bryan Hymel) for assistance.
Verdi's frequently overlooked mature opera in five acts followed the composer's better known 'Rigoletto', 'Il Trovatore', 'La Traviata'. Making his Covent Garden debut, celebrated director Stefan Herheim brings this monumental work to the Royal Opera for the first time. The starting point for his imaginative interpretation is Paris in 1855, when the opera was first performed, including a stunning recreation of the Paris Opera itself. The star cast are joined by the opera ballet, with Johann Kobborg choreographing dancers from The Royal Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet.
