At 723m (2,372 ft) Ingleborough is the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, and one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. We will climb Ingleborough from a lovely Yorkshire village of Clapham, using a route which Wainwright described as one of the finest walks in the Yorkshire Dales. Our route will take us through follows the Ingleborough Estate nature trail, before passing the Craven Fault, the showcave of Ingleborough Cave, the pretty wooded limestone ravine of Trow Gill and the pothole of Gaping Gill (the tallest unbroken waterfall in England and the largest underground chamber naturally open to the surface). We will then cross a marshy area and climb up to the shoulder of Little Ingleborough before following the ridge to the summit.

The second part of the name Ingleborough is derived from the Old English word burh, meaning "a fortified place"; in this case, a hill fort. The remains of the Iron Age hill fort cover 15 acres (61,000 m2) on top of Ingleborough, and the defensive wall can still be seen although much robbed for stone. It is now thought that this fort was in fact Celtic, and belonged to the Brigantes tribe, the largest tribe in Iron Age Britain. The fort was known to the Romans as the Kings fort. We will return to Clapham through beautiful limestone pavement to the small top of Norber and descent past the famed Norber erratics. Upon return we will get a well-deserved dinner and a pint at the New Inn in Clapham.

Kit list: walking boots, walking trousers (no jeans), gaiters (this walk can be boggy), waterproofs, fleece, hat, gloves, packed lunch, water bottle/tea flask
