Starting in the Yorkshire village of Malham, this spectacular walk is the southern Yorkshire Dales classic, crossing some of the best limestone scenery in the Dales.
Leaving Malham, we will climb up Gordale Scar, a dramatic limestone ravine with two waterfalls and overhanging limestone cliffs over 100 metres high, which featured in a William Wordsworth sonnet and James Ward and JMW Turner paintings.
From the top of the Gordale Scar we’ll walk towards the Black Pasture Hill for a picturesque lunch/tea break before heading down to Malham Tarn, a glacial lake and at 377 metres (1,237 ft) above sea level, the highest lake in England.
We will return via the beautiful Malham Cove, a large, curved limestone cliff at the head of a valley, with a fine area of limestone pavement at the top. Along with Gordale Scar, Malham Cove was featured in an episode of the BBC TV series Seven Natural Wonders as one of the natural wonders of Yorkshire. It also featured in “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows”!
From Malham Cove we will walk back towards Malham and a well deserved Sunday roast at The Lister Arms.
Kit list: walking boots (no trainers), walking trousers (no jeans), fleece, waterproofs, gaiters, hat, gloves, snacks/sandwich, tea flask/water bottle.
