Brimham Rocks are balancing rock formations on Brimham Moor in North Yorkshire. The rocks stand at a height of nearly 30 metres in an area owned by the National Trust which is part of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They are an amazing collection of weird and wonderful rock formations which make a great day out for those wanting to enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh air and magnificent views over Nidderdale. There are some truly amazing shapes to be spotted amongst the rocks, including the Dancing Bear, The Eagle and The Gorilla. You can also crawl through The Smartie Tube and balance on the Rocking Stones. We will walk over heather moorland or through beautiful woodland, and take in the fresh air and Yorkshire countryside.

Our walk will also take us to the Yorke's Folly which dominates the skyline as you look towards Greenhow from Bewerley. Built as a grand folly in the late 18th century, the three towers were created to look like the ruin of an east window or church crossing. It was said to have been built when work was scarce in the district. One of the shafts was blown down in a storm in 1893 so it is now locally known as 'Two Stoops'.

Our walk will start and finish in the lovely market town of Pateley Bridge (known locally as Pateley). It has the oldest building housing a sweet shop in England, which was established in 1827 and is the oldest existing building housing a sweet shop in the country. Pateley Bridge is also a hub for local artists and designers, which include jewellers, milliner, textile art & gifts, sculptors, fine artist and glassblowers. It also has lovely pubs and we will stop in one of them at the end of our walk for a well-deserved pint and a roast.

Kit list: hat, gloves, warm clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, walking trousers walking boots as may be slippy tea flask.

Regular walking can...

  • fill you with energy and confidence
  • help you beat stress
  • make your heart fitter and strengthen your bones
  • help you keep your weight down
