This relaxing winter walk will take us through beautiful Cheshire countryside from the village of Spurstow to the stunning ruins of the Beeston Castle (entry £5.50, optional). Formerly a royal castle, it was built in the 1220s by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, on his return from the Crusades and then taken over by Henry III. Perched on a 350ft Beeston crag, Beeston Castle is said to have "perhaps the most stunning views of any castle in England". From there, we will follow the Sandstone Way across the woods of Peckforton Hills, bypassing Peckforton Castle, a XIX century mediaeval style castle (now a hotel) which we can admire from nearby Stanner Nab. We will then climb Bulkeley Hill and return through the fields to Spurstow for a well deserved pint and a Sunday roast at the beautiful XIX century Yew Tree.

Kit list: hat, gloves, warm clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, walking trousers (not jeans!), walking boots, packed lunch, tea flask.
