TEGG’S NOSE COUNTRY PARK TO SHUTLINGSLOE THE ‘CHESHIRE MATTERORN’
DISTANCE: 10 MILES
TIME: 5 HOURS
DIFFICULTY: 2.5 (2 LONG BUT NOT PARTICULARLY STRENUOUS CLIMBS AND 2 STEEP DESCENTS)
The walk starts and ends at the visitors car park at Tegg’s Nose Country Park. Experience Cheshire’s wild hill country where rock dominates the landscape. Dry stone walls and sturdy barns add to the dramatic character of the steeply sided valleys while many of the hill tops are pitted with old quarries. From Tegg’s Nose ridge we make a steep descent in to the former royal hunting ground of Macclesfield Forest, a sparsely-populated area of rolling hills, wild and open moorlands and rushing streams. The area has seen little change over the centuries apart from the planting of conifers and construction of reservoirs on its western perimeter, both of which features provide pleasant walking and add to the landscape. For most of the way this is an undulating walk but there is a long, though not particularly steep or strenuous climb to the summit of Shutlingsloe. From a distance, it is easy to see why Shutlingsloe has been described as ‘Cheshire’s Matterhorn’, for its abrupt and distinctive peak, although only rising to 498 m, does bear a striking resemblance to its somewhat higher Continental countepart.
Kit list: fleece, hat, gloves (it may be windy on the ridge), waterproof jacket, walking boots, walking trousers (not jeans!), water bottle/flask, packed lunch
