Hope Valley Circuit – Win Hill and Lose Hill from Hope
Duration: 4h with stops
Distance: 8.7 miles
Difficulty: 3 (two steep ascents)
Getting there: Car share (circular walk, meet at Tesco Disbury car park by the clock tower at 9:30 am)
Hope Valley is a beautiful valley right in between the gritstone Dark Peak area and the limestone White Peak area of the Peak District. The circular walk we’re doing follows an ancient Roman road from Glossop via Snake Pass to Hope and lies on a legendary Anglo-Saxon battle site (hence the names of the peaks).
We will start and finish our walk in the picturesque Hope village, a small village with some nice farm shops and pubs. From there we’ll head uphill to climb the first of our peaks, the Win Hill (462 m or 1,516 ft). The climb is quite steep but rewarding as views from the rocky top of the hill over the Ladybower reservoir and towards Stanage Edge are really beautiful. From there we will follow the old Roman road along the ridge to the ancient guide post of Hope Cross and slowly descend towards Edale via the historic packhorse trail of Jaggers Clough. We’ll then cross to the other side of Hope Valley and climb steeply again to Back Tor, which offers great views of the entire ridge and the valley beyond and with it’s rocky outcrops is an amazing photographic opportunity. From there we’ll follow the path onto Lose Hill (476 m or 1,562 ft), another great place to admire the views before descending to Hope for a well deserved pint.
