Four aging opera singers are reunited in Dustin Hoffman's funny and moving all-star directorial debut. Beecham House is a genteel retirement home for musicians, situated in the leafy heart of the English countryside. But feathers are about to be ruffled by the arrival of a new resident. Aging opera singers Reggie (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Cissy (Pauline Collins) are gearing up for their annual performance to mark Verdi's birthday when the newcomer arrives. They're surprised to find that it's legendary soprano Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) - the fourth member of their formerly illustrious quartet and Reggie's ex-wife! It's not long before her diva-like behaviour has re-opened old wounds, threatening the gala concert itself. Adapted from his own stage play by veteran screenwriter Ronald Harwood, Dustin Hoffman's first film behind the camera is a sharp comedy-drama. Rounding out the top-notch cast is Michael Gambon, who's on terrific form as the unbearable concert director.
