Join Social Circle this Summer for their first visit to the beautiful Lake District its one of our most stunning, scenic walking holidays; custom-designed to suit a range of fitness levels providing a choice of walks.

The Lake District is famous for an abundance of wildlife and staggering cultural heritage. The stunning hills, lakes and tarns have been an inspiration to generations of British poets and artists. In terms of outdoor pursuits during the summer months, the Lake District is totally unique for its varied landscapes and habitats, and offers stunning scenery found nowhere else in England.

This year Social Circle have booked the exclusive use of one of the most spectacularly located YHAs in England, the Coppermines YHA in Coniston, for an amazing all-inclusive summer weekend of walking and socialising.

Come join us in the beautiful scenery of the Lake District, meet like-minded people and share a story or two over a pint in front of the roaring fire. There is a choice of walks (below) depending on your ability, the weather or simply what you fancy on the day, so don’t be shy, come walking with us, it’s great fun!

The plan:

Friday

Arrive at Coppermines in time for dinner, then unpack and unwind in front of the fire (there’s a licensed bar in the hostel!), or head down to Coniston for a pint in the local pub.

Saturday - Choice of 3 walks:

Variant A (difficulty 4, steep ascent, few steep descents): 9 miles, 6h – Old Man of Coniston, Swirl How and Wetherlam. This beautiful walk covers spectacular Coniston Fells Ridge encompassing some disused slate mines, remnants of the slate mining industry and the beautiful Lake District scenery. Old Man of Coniston (2,634ft (803m)), once painted by JMW Turner and highest point of historical Lancashire.

Variant B (difficulty 3, one steep descent; it would be a sin not to go up the Old Man!): 8 miles, 4-5h – Old Man of Coniston and Swirl How via Goats Hause. A modification of the above walk; a gentler, easier ascent of the Old Man of Coniston and shorter descent route.

Variant C - Shorter walk (difficulty 2, low level, no hills climbed): 8.5 miles, 4.5h – Coniston to Tarn Hows. This walk takes us around the picturesque Tarn Hows to the beautiful Tom Gill (with several small waterfalls) and Glen Mary bridge.

After the walks we’ll all meet back in Coniston for a well deserved dinner and a pint or three.

After the walks we will meet again in the Coppermines YHA for a well deserved dinner and a pint or three in front of the roaring fire to put our feet up and share the adventures of a well spent day.

Sunday

Lazy breakfast/Sunday papers before heading to Hawkshead (dubbed the prettiest village in the Lake District). Our 6 mile walk will take us through picturesque tarns (which served as inspiration to Beatrix Potter), and down to the Hill Top Farm, once home to the famous children's author.

After a cheeky drink at the quaint Tower Bank Arms we head back to Esthwaithe Water. and the cars

Kit list: walking boots (no trainers), walking trousers (no jeans), gaiters, waterproofs, fleece, hat, tea flask/water bottle, day pack and plenty of good humour.
