24th - Castleton, Hope, Lose Hill, Mam Tor then follow Limestone way back into Castleton

Distance 14 km (8 3/4 miles)
Total ascent 680m
Start/Finish Castleton (SK150829)
Time 5 Hours plus stops so about 6 hrs

We begin our walk in the beautiful village of Castleton which sits between the Gritstone Dark Peak and the Limestone White Peak areas.
We walk beside the brook of Peakshole water into Hope Village.
Our first ascent is steep but quickly takes us to the top of Lose Hill
We then gradually traverse along Great Ridge, down to Hollins Cross and then back up to the summit of the dramatic Mam Tor, which is also known as "Shivering Mountain"

If we're lucky we may see paragliders taking off to hoping the thermals will take them across Hope valley, and below us is the remains of the old A625 road, caught in a landslip caused by one too many "shivers"

Our next leg takes us brings us through Windy Knoll and then green fields until we reach the Limestone Way.
We then have a gentle descent as we return to  Castleton where we can stop for a rewarding pint in one of the many pubs.

Regular walking can...

  • fill you with energy and confidence
  • help you beat stress
  • make your heart fitter and strengthen your bones
