Ingleborough Cave, Gaping Gill and Ingleborough from Clapham
Meeting point: Tesco Didsbury car park (by the clock tower) 8am
Driving time: 1.5h
Difficulty: 3 (one long ascent)
Distance: 10
Duration: 5h
Gaping Gill (also known as Gaping Ghyll) is a natural cave in North Yorkshire. It is one of the unmistakable landmarks– a 105 metres (344 ft) deep pothole with the stream Fell Beck flowing into it. After falling through one of the largest known underground chambers in Britain, the water disappears into the bouldery floor and eventually resurges adjacent to Ingleborough Cave. Our walk will take us past both caves, with an option of visiting the stunning Ingleborough Cave (50min tour, £8).
After visiting the cave we will then continue climbing Ingleborough, at 723 m (2,372 ft) second highest peak in Yorkshire Dales and one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks.
We’ll drink our tea admiring the 360o views and then descend back to Clapham for a well deserved meal at the New Inn.
Kit list: waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, walking trousers (no jeans!), walking boots, sunglasses, packed lunch, water/tea flask
