For 19th century grandeur Manchester is hard to beat. There are Classical meeting halls and clubs, Italianate cotton palaces, Gothic towers and spires, and Baroque banks. In the 20th century new styles emerged: Portland steel frames for the neo-Georgian office blocks; tower blocks; post modernist constructions, functional offices, zany new builds – and most of the designs stolen from other cities’ designs.
On this illustrated talk at the stunning Gorton Monastery, itself a masterpiece of Gothic revival architecture, Ed Glinert explains why Manchester looks like it does.
